Hackers Paradise or our presentation at Defcon – A look behind the scenes

DEFCON in Las Vegas is more than just an annual event: it is the ultimate meeting place for the global hacker community and a catalyst where technology enthusiasts drive the wave of innovation in cyber security. This year, my colleague Lukas Sökefeld and I had the honour of speaking at this prestigious conference about our PSIM hack of the market leader in Physical Security Information Management Systems.

DEFCON: A central hub for expertise in the hacker community

Every year, the most innovative experts in the hacker scene meet in Las Vegas for DEFCON. This event has established itself as the primary platform for the exchange of expertise. Experts present new methods for exploiting security vulnerabilities, emphasising the constant need for vigilance in our digital world. In turn, security consultants and defence specialists showcase their latest defence strategies, sparking a constant race between attack and defence.

Our PSIM hack in the ICS Village at DEFCON

We had the opportunity to present the market leader’s hack in the ICS Village. This focussed specifically on industrial control systems – crucial elements of our infrastructure. A PSIM is a command & control system for physical security, which is essential for critical infrastructures and companies with high and highest security requirements. Speaking to an audience of subject matter experts about our discoveries and solutions was not only a confirmation of the relevance of our work, but also a contribution to the continuous progress in the security industry. Sharing stage moments with colleagues has not only a professional, but above all a personal value for me. Shared experiences strengthen the team and promote individual development – an aspect that I particularly value in our corporate culture.

More than just professional development

After so much technical stimulation and the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas, we were longing for some peace and seclusion. We decided to escape the city and go on a nature adventure. We first travelled to the Hualapai Indian territory in the Grand Canyon, where we gained unforgettable impressions while rafting on the Colorado River. Our journey then took us to Death Valley in California, a landscape characterised by rugged beauty despite its extreme conditions. During DEFCON, we not only learnt a lot professionally, but also had an unforgettable time as a team.

Continuous dialogue with the security community – exchange encouraged!

Back home, you realise that a trip like this shapes and strengthens your sense of togetherness – and you take this energy back to the office with you.

DEFCON is more than just a conference: it is a community that is shaping the future of cyber security. Our commitment in this area is stronger than ever. We look forward to more DEFCONs and continued dialogue with the security community.

Want to know more about our findings from the DEFCON visit? Dialogue with the security community is close to our hearts and we are always open to discussions and highly value the mutual exchange of knowledge.

Deepfakes: More Than Just a Digital Facelift – A Cybersecurity Threat

I recently came across an interesting article by BlackBerry titled "Deepfakes and Digital Deception." It painted a vivid picture of the rising threat of deepfakes in the cybersecurity landscape. While deepfakes can be entertaining, their potential for malicious use is what truly caught my attention. The article effectively highlights how deepfakes, fueled by advancements in generative AI, are becoming increasingly sophisticated and accessible. This ease of creation, coupled with the persuasive power of deepfakes, makes them a potent tool for cybercriminals.
